Interdisciplinary, interuniversity field of study Bioeconomy

Interdisciplinary, interuniversity field of study Bioeconomy as an answer to trends in global economy

Bioeconomy is an interdisciplinary branch of economy, which can be defined as sustainable usage of renewable natural resources in order to produce goods and services. The most developed countries in the world declare, that in the nearest future their economies will be based on bioeconomy. It is also European Union goal, as evidenced by adopted in 2012 by European Commission document “Innovating for Sustainable Growth: A Bioeconomy for Europe”. It should be underlined, that this is not just a temporary fashion, but a necessity. Global economy has to reduce the dependence on non-renewable sources, thus most of the sectors should be lead by bioeconomy (usage of renewable resources). In order to realize the undertakings in the field of bioeconomy and to follow global trends, there is a need of properly prepared and educated staff. This is the reason why three technical universities i.e. Łódź University of Technology, Warsaw University of Technology and Military University of Technology have created interuniversity, interdisciplinary field of studies Bioeconomy.

Interdisciplinary, interuniversity field of study Bioeconomy

Field of studies Bioeconomy is an innovative concept of education, which is based on collaboration of technical universities. Their scientific and didactic potential as well as research facilities (laboratories with specialized equipment) complement each other, creating a didactic offer, which fully responds to assumed education profile of future graduate of this field of studies. Educational program uses up-to-date knowledge, latest discoveries and scientific achievements in the field of bioeconomy, especially in food processing, environmental engineering, bioenergetics, logistics and technology and industrial processes. It is worth noticing, that it encompasses engineering knowledge from several disciplines with consideration of science and modern technologies, logistics, economy, legal regulations and management of intellectual property. Therefore, apart from passing the newest knowledge, this educational program allows for development of skills of innovative approach to problem solving and creates competences for future collaboration of science and business.
Bioeconomy is the first field of studies in Poland with such defined learning outcomes, lead at bachelor degree. It is characterized with a complex approach to new solutions in bioeconomy. Within this field of studies, specialists with interdisciplinary knowledge will be educated, who: will have interdisciplinary knowledge, will be prepared to individually solve basic practical problems, will design installations and will be able to work in research-developmental teams during implementation of innovative technological solutions. Thus, studies in this field provide education of technical staff, which will fulfill high requirements expected from engineers, who are ready to meet the needs of changing labor market.
